Ingemar Hedenius’ renowned and controversial classic Tro och vetande was first published in 1949. It lay the foundations for one of the most comprehensive cultural debates in Swedish history. Hedenius’ attack against Christianity, theology and the Swedish Church was very successful and the book’s hard-hitting argumentation changed Swedish religious criticism for decades to come.
It is now 60 years since Tro och vetande’s first publication, but the questions that the book poses and the discussion that the book started are doubtlessly as current issues today as they were in 1949. Hedenius message to only believe in that which there is logical reasons to hold as true is still a guiding light for those who strive to promote science and a secular society. Tro och vetande has engaged a wide audience in a complex and important philosophical discussion.
