In life, he was a tub-thumping atheist, and much of his book is given over to ranting against God, prayers, and any suggestion of an afterlife. In Britain, such topics tend to send people to sleep, but in America, where Hitchens lived and worked, they transport them into paroxysms of fury. Hitchens always loved a good squabble.
